If I were told about an upcoming tactical RPG filled with anime-inspired characters, my immediate response would be, “Hell yeah, give it to me!” and I would expect it to be a new Fire Emblem or perhaps another Valkyria Chronicles. However, the game that is filling that void is Unicorn Overlord, the latest creation from renowned Japanese developer Vanillaware. While Vanillaware is best known for its cult side-scrolling action-RPGs like Odin Sphere and Dragon’s Crown, as well as the mind-bending story-driven 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, it has also dabbled in the strategy genre with GrimGrimoire. Nevertheless, Unicorn Overlord breaks new ground for the studio by placing a newfound emphasis on tactics within an extensive RPG foundation.
Having had the opportunity to play a four-hour preview demo, I was thoroughly impressed with the game’s deep and interconnected systems, as well as its challenging battles. What stood out to me the most, however, was how different it was from other tactical RPGs.
