ABC RuralRed imported fire ants Senate inquiry hears NSW farmers call for urgent action to manage pest’s spread

Xavier Martin, the head of NSW Farmers, is urgently calling for effective fire ant management strategies to combat the emerging threat of Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA) in the state. He emphasized the need for practical biosecurity solutions rather than wasteful overseas research trips. Martin expressed frustration during the Senate inquiry into RIFA, highlighting the concerning impacts and rapid spread of these invasive pests.

Originally from South America, RIFA was first detected in Australia in 2001 and recently expanded from Queensland into northern New South Wales in late 2023. Farmers, according to Martin, are increasingly dismayed by the perceived inefficiency in utilizing agriculture levies to control the spread of red imported fire ants. He noted the continuous expansion of the fire ant population, labeling the situation as a series of chronic failures in management strategies.

Despite the industry levies’ continuous rise, Martin pointed out the lack of tangible results in managing the fire ant infestation. He criticized the excessive focus on theoretical discussions and international trips, stressing the urgent need for practical responses to address the issue. Martin emphasized the importance of taking immediate action and ceasing ineffective practices to effectively implement fire ant management strategies.

Xavier Martin emphasizes the importance of implementing practical solutions to address the issue of fire ant management strategies. He advocates for the enforcement of fines against individuals who violate biosecurity protocols but also stresses the necessity for more proactive measures on the field. According to Mr. Martin, while he appreciates the efforts of the NSW government in increasing fines, it is crucial that these fines are effectively enforced to combat the challenges posed by fire ants.
