Iowa guard Caitlin Clark (22) celebrates after becoming the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I basketball during the first half of a college game against Ohio State, Sunday, March 3, 2024, in Iowa City, Iowa.

Caitlin Clark of Iowa made history by breaking the NCAA’s all-time scoring record on Sunday, concluding her final season with the Hawkeyes in a match against Ohio State.

Approaching her last regular-season game, Clark trailed Pete Maravich’s career record by 17 points, which had stood at 3,667 points since 1970. She surpassed this long-standing record with a free-throw towards the end of the first half.

Despite reaching 3,668 points, Clark displayed no immediate reaction. During a halftime interview, she admitted she was unaware of breaking the record at that moment.

“When they announced it and everybody screamed — that’s when I knew,” she expressed.

Clark’s journey to achieving the record for the most points by a Division I player, regardless of gender, has been nothing short of exceptional. This season, she has maintained an impressive average of 32.2 points per game, with a notable performance of scoring 49 points in a single game against Michigan last month.

In her recent game just four days prior, Clark surpassed Lynette Woodard’s women’s college record of 3,649 points, established for Kansas from 1977-81, before the NCAA officially recognized women’s sports.

“Listen, this is the greatest ticket on the planet right now,” Woodard expressed in an interview with ESPN before the game against Ohio State. “I’m going to enjoy this right now.”

As anticipation grew to witness Clark make history on her senior day, ticket prices for the record-setting game against Ohio State soared. Following the season, Clark intends to enter the WNBA draft.

The ticketing platform Logitix reported an average ticket price of $598 for the game, based on sales since February 1.
