Tony Mokbel Rejects Claims of Being an Informant

Tony Mokbel, a notorious crime kingpin, has appeared in court for the second day of his ongoing appeal hearing against his convictions. During the hearing, a prosecutor presented detailed accounts of phone calls in which lawyer-turned-informer Nicola Gobbo allegedly claimed that Mokbel was considering becoming a police informant. However, Mokbel vehemently denied these claims.

Details of Betrayal by Nicola Gobbo Revealed

In a Melbourne court, it was revealed how Nicola Gobbo, a former lawyer of Mokbel, betrayed her client. Mokbel asserted that many of the statements Gobbo made to the police were lies. The 58-year-old gangland figure is currently in the witness box as he appeals a lengthy jail sentence resulting from three police drug operations known as Quills, Magnum, and Orbital.

Prosecutor Presents Informer Contact Reports

During the court proceedings, prosecutor David Glynn read out details of phone calls between Gobbo and police handlers. These details were contained in documents called Informer Contact Reports (ICRs). Glynn claimed that Mokbel had told Gobbo he would plead guilty to drug charges and expose corrupt members of the Victoria Police in 2007.

Mokbel firmly denied these allegations, stating, “That’s not true. 100 per cent I didn’t say I would.” When Glynn mentioned that Gobbo had reported that Mokbel was considering talking to the police, Mokbel responded, “Again, that’s not true. 110 per cent.”

Next Steps in the Appeal Process

The ongoing hearings will determine how Mokbel’s case will be managed and heard in the Court of Appeal. The court will carefully consider the evidence presented and make a decision regarding Mokbel’s convictions and sentence.

Tony Mokbel informant claims

Tony Mokbel, who was in custody in Greece at the time, made several claims regarding his informant, Ms Gobbo. Mokbel, who was facing serious drug trafficking charges, sought to gather evidence of Victoria Police corruption and protect his life.

Ms Gobbo, whom Mokbel referred to as the “driving machine” of his legal team, allegedly provided information about Mokbel’s legal strategy to the police. This occurred as Mokbel fought against an extradition order to Australia.

In addition to sharing legal strategy details, Mokbel wanted Australian media reports about him compiled to demonstrate to Greek authorities that he would not receive a fair trial if he were sent back home. He had hoped that Ms Gobbo would join his legal team in Greece and potentially provide supporting evidence in a Greek court.

Unfortunately, Mokbel’s plans did not come to fruition. He lost his extradition battle and was eventually returned to Australia in 2008.
