Understanding the Potential Cease-Fire Deal in Gaza
National security adviser Jake Sullivan addressed the press at the White House in Washington on Feb. 14. The discussions involved representatives from the U.S., Israel, and various Middle East nations reaching an “understanding” on the terms of a potential cease-fire deal in Gaza. However, the participation of Hamas in signing the agreement remains uncertain.
During an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, Sullivan confirmed the progress made, stating, “It is true that the representatives of Israel, the United States, Egypt, and Qatar met in Paris and reached a consensus on the fundamental aspects of a temporary cease-fire hostage deal agreement.”
Sullivan emphasized the need for Qatar and Egypt to engage in indirect discussions with Hamas to secure their agreement on releasing the hostages. Meanwhile, Egyptian officials revealed that Hamas had agreed to certain conditions, including revising its demands for an immediate truce and Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza. Additionally, Hamas reduced the number of Palestinian prisoners it seeks to be released in exchange for the remaining Israeli hostages.
Following a deadly attack by Hamas fighters that resulted in numerous casualties, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza, where the situation remains tense. Sullivan expressed optimism for a definitive resolution to the hostage deal agreement contours in the near future.
