The Queensland government has taken a significant step towards the long-awaited Sunshine Coast rail line by allocating nearly $3 billion for the initial phase of the project. Deputy Premier Cameron Dick revealed on Sunday a substantial investment of $2.75 billion to construct a 19km dual track from Beerwah to Caloundra, marking the commencement of the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail initiative.

The upcoming project is set to include stops at Beerwah, Nirimba (Aura), Caloundra, Aroona, Birtinya, Mountain Creek, and Maroochydore, as outlined by the Queensland Government. The initial phase is projected to be finished by the time of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is anticipated to reduce travel time from Caloundra to Brisbane by 45 minutes during peak hours, aiming to alleviate congestion on local roads, according to Mr. Dick.

Commencement of construction is scheduled for 2026, pending a matching funding commitment from the federal government to supplement the state’s investment. Previously, the Commonwealth had only allocated $1.6 billion to the initiative. However, the announcement was met with criticism from the state’s Opposition deputy leader, Jarrod Bleijie, who labeled it as a setback for the Sunshine Coast rail project. The LNP expressed reluctance to endorse the plan unless Beerwah is linked to Maroochydore by 2032.

The government’s feasibility study estimated the initial phase to cost between $5.5 billion and $7 billion, with the state government having submitted the case to Infrastructure Australia for review. Subsequent stages of the project are expected to extend further north, with Mr. Dick describing it as a “mega project” and the most significant rail undertaking in Queensland for a generation. Mr. Dick emphasized that this is the largest passenger spur line ever constructed by the Queensland government.

Despite expressing confidence in federal support for the endeavor, Mr. Dick acknowledged the need for the federal government to navigate its budget processes before committing fully. Criticism was directed at the state government by Mr. Bleijie for not ensuring the completion of the entire rail line to Maroochydore ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. He contrasted the delays under the current Labor administration with what he claimed would have been a prompt initiation under an LNP government, emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive rail connection to Maroochydore before the 2032 Olympic Games.

“It’s concerning that the rail line to Maroochydore falls short by 20 kilometers from crucial locations such as the athletes’ village in Maroochydore and the events at Alexandra Headlands,” Mr. Addison expressed. He further added, “The line doesn’t even extend to Kawana, let alone Birtinya where important Olympic basketball events are expected to take place.”

Mr. Addison emphasized that the extension to Birtinya is part of the project’s second stage, raising serious doubts about the project’s overall progress and effectiveness.

The completed Sunshine Coast rail project will include stops at Aroona, Birtinya, Mountain Creek, and Maroochydore.
