Will Shortz’s Recovery from Stroke

Will Shortz, the renowned NPR puzzlemaster and puzzle editor for The New York Times, recently disclosed that he is in the process of recuperating from a stroke.

In a brief message aired at the conclusion of NPR’s Sunday Puzzle, Shortz explained his absence from the show due to his health condition. He expressed, “Hey guys, this is Will Shortz. Sorry I’ve been out the last few weeks. I had a stroke on Feb. 4 and have been in rehabilitation since then, but I am making progress. I’m looking forward to being back with new puzzles soon.”

Greg Pliska, the chief puzzle officer of The Puzzler podcast and former puzzle guru of NPR’s Ask Me Another, has been temporarily filling in for Shortz since Feb. 11.

Since the inception of Weekend Edition Sunday in 1987, Shortz has been an integral part of the Sunday Puzzle. Every week, he engages one contestant in an on-air quiz while encouraging listeners at home to participate. His dedication to the show has been unwavering over the years.

Recently, the show paid a visit to Shortz at his residence in Pleasantville, N.Y., where he discussed his fondness for table tennis, his early fascination with puzzles, and aspects of his personal life.

Ayesha Rascoe, the host of Weekend Edition, extended her well wishes for Shortz’s speedy recovery, stating, “We here at Weekend Edition, we love Will and I know that everybody at home does too. And we are rooting for him and we are so hopeful and know that he will feel better soon.”

Pliska also expressed his anticipation for Shortz’s return to the show, emphasizing, “I know I speak for the whole puzzling community in wishing Will the best. He has been a great friend to me for many years and as much as I love playing the puzzle on air with you Ayesha, I look forward to getting to play from home with you and Will again in my Sunday morning pajamas.”
