Gillis’ Monologue on SNL

Shane Gillis’ return to Saturday Night Live was anticipated by many, given his controversial past. However, his monologue on the show did not dwell much on the previous backlash or his career progression. Gillis humorously discouraged the audience from looking up his past, setting a light tone for the evening.

Instead of boasting or addressing the controversy head-on, Gillis swiftly transitioned into a somewhat uneasy opening monologue with subtle risqué jokes. He playfully remarked that “every little boy is just their mom’s gay best friend” and shared his observation about the joyous nature of individuals with Down syndrome, including his own relatives.

Throughout the monologue, Gillis appeared increasingly uneasy, despite his usual persona of a slightly awkward, lovable goof. He humorously acknowledged moments where he expected bigger laughs from the audience, even commenting on the bright lighting in the studio. This contrast in perception between the live audience and viewers at home added to the comedic tension of the performance.
