Mr Goodenough was exposed as a member of “The Clan,” a group of MPs that included former federal finance minister Mathias Cormann and WA Upper House MPs Peter Collier and Nick Goiran. Leaked messages from the group revealed their tactics of legally manipulating party branches to promote their preferred candidates while also making derogatory remarks about Liberal women.

Despite the scandal, Mr Goodenough was still selected as the Liberal Party’s candidate for Moore in 2022, leading Mr Connelly to seek opportunities elsewhere to continue his political career. Mr Connelly then ran for the seat of Cowan in the 2022 Federal Election but was unsuccessful in his bid.

Subsequently, Mr Connelly was nominated as the Liberals’ candidate for the neighboring seat of Cowan, where he faced a defeat by the incumbent Labor MP Anne Aly, who significantly expanded her winning margin from 0.9 per cent to 10.8 per cent.
