Trump has recently secured a bond to cover an $83.3 million jury award granted to writer E. Jean Carroll in a defamation trial related to rape allegations she made against him. Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, confirmed the bond amount of $91.6 million from the Federal Insurance Co. and filed an appeal to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Judge Lewis A. Kaplan declined to extend the deadline for posting the bond, ensuring that Carroll, aged 80, can receive the award if it stands after appeals. Trump is under financial strain due to this judgment and another significant one in a lawsuit where he was found guilty of misrepresenting his wealth in financial documents provided to banks. A New York judge has set a deadline of March 25 for Trump to pay the $454 million civil fraud penalty or secure a bond for the full amount.

Trump’s legal team has requested a stay on the judgment while appealing, warning that he may need to sell properties to cover the penalty. Kaplan noted that Trump’s financial difficulties are a result of his delayed response to the defamation case verdict from late January, where Trump denied the claims made by Carroll in her memoir about an alleged incident in 1996. Despite Trump’s denial, a jury awarded Carroll $5 million for sexual abuse in the encounter, not for the rape claims as per New York state law, and defamation in statements made in October 2022.

The trial in January focused on Trump’s 2019 statements, with the jury instructed to accept the findings from the previous trial. Trump’s absence at the May trial was noted, but he briefly testified and was present during the January trial, where his behavior, including disparaging comments, led Kaplan to consider removing him from the courtroom.
