The University of Southern California announced that due to safety concerns, the valedictorian will not be speaking at the commencement ceremony. Asna Tabassum, this year’s valedictorian, faced opposition from student groups regarding her social media posts about the Israel-Palestine conflict. Controversy Surrounding USC Valedictorian Speech Safety
Receiving backlash for her remarks on Israel, some labeled Tabassum’s content as “antisemitic bigotry.” Conversely, other social media users defended her right to freedom of speech.
USC Provost Andrew Guzman, responsible for selecting the valedictorian, expressed concerns about the situation expanding beyond the campus and becoming a security risk for the upcoming event, expected to host 65,000 attendees.
Announcing the decision, Guzman stated, “After thorough deliberation, we have opted against having our student valedictorian give a speech at the commencement. While regrettable, safety must take precedence over tradition.”
Tabassum, a South Asian-American and Muslim, addressed the issue, citing facing a wave of discriminatory attacks due to her unwavering advocacy for universal human rights.
Concerns Over Safety and Free Speech Surrounding USC Valedictorian Speech
Tabassum expressed doubts about the university’s justification for canceling her speech, questioning the emphasis on safety concerns. She revealed that her request for a threat assessment was turned down. Moreover, in discussions with university officials, she was informed that despite the availability of resources, USC would not enhance security measures as it conflicted with the desired image.
Expressing her disappointment, Tabassum, a student of biomedical engineering and resistance to genocide, remarked, “I am not surprised by those who promote hatred, but I am taken aback by my own university’s abandonment after four years of being my home.”
Addressing the situation, Guzman stated, “USC upholds the values of free speech and dissent as long as they do not disrupt university operations.”
Guzman further mentioned that USC’s Department of Public Safety, comprising 300 employees, will be fully active during the commencement ceremony, alongside officers from the Los Angeles Police Department.
Emphasizing the commitment to the safety and well-being of the USC community in the upcoming period, Guzman assured that the school remains steadfast in its efforts.
Regarding the selection of this year’s valedictorian, Guzman explained that the choice was made after evaluating various factors, excluding considerations related to social media presence.
