Ukraine’s Interest in Australian Abrams Tanks
Australia may soon receive a formal request from Ukraine to donate its aging fleet of Abrams tanks, as part of a comprehensive military support package. This support includes crucial ammunition required in the conflict-ridden nation.
As Ukraine marks the second anniversary of Russia’s aggressive invasion, reports indicate that the country is in the final stages of preparing a request to acquire the Australian Army’s M1A1 Abrams tanks. These tanks are set to be replaced by the newer M1A2 version, manufactured in the United States.
Sources within Kyiv have disclosed that recent discussions involving Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov have revolved around the possibility of approaching the Albanese government to secure all 59 tanks from Australia’s older fleet.
Previously, Ukraine had urged Australia to participate in an international “tank coalition” and had formally requested 14 of the Australian Army’s older tanks, along with training. However, this request has not yet been approved.
Ukraine’s Interest in Acquiring Australia’s Abrams Tanks
Reports from Kyiv have confirmed that Ukraine is seeking to obtain all 59 Abrams tanks from Australia’s older fleet, as per sources in the Australian Defence sector.
Initially, there was resistance from the Labor party regarding the request due to the costly necessity of sending the vehicles to the United States before transferring them to Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
In a similar scenario, the Albanese government had declined a request in January to send Australia’s retired Taipan helicopters to Ukraine following an accident that resulted in the permanent grounding of the aircraft and the loss of four defence personnel.
While it is believed that essential maintenance on the tanks could be carried out in Europe, the Defence Department spokesperson refrained from confirming any recent requests from Ukraine specifically related to the Abrams tanks.
The Australian government remains committed to supporting Ukraine and announced a $50 million contribution to the International Fund for Ukraine, aimed at assisting in the procurement of crucial military capabilities for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
During a visit to Jakarta, Defence Minister Richard Marles mentioned that Abrams tanks were not currently under consideration, but Australia is actively engaging with Ukraine to understand their requirements and provide practical assistance.
Mr. Marles emphasized the importance of Ukraine resolving the conflict on its own terms and reiterated Australia’s enduring support for Ukraine in this prolonged endeavor.
