State Industrial Relations Minister Simone McGurk views this development as a crucial stride towards reducing the gender retirement pay gap. The anticipated cost to the government over the next four years is estimated to be $46 million.

Cook acknowledged the challenges women face in retirement due to lower superannuation balances, often a result of taking time off work to care for children.
