From July 1, parents in public service roles like teachers, nurses, and health professionals will be eligible for additional payments. This initiative follows the recent government announcement regarding superannuation benefits for parents under the paid parental leave scheme. The implementation of this policy is subject to parliamentary approval and is slated to commence in July 2025, post the upcoming election.

State Industrial Relations Minister Simone McGurk views this development as a crucial stride towards reducing the gender retirement pay gap. She emphasized the disparity in retirement incomes between men and women, attributing it to various factors leading to women being paid less overall. The anticipated cost to the government over the next four years is estimated to be $46 million.

McGurk highlighted that women, compared to men, are more inclined to take parental leave, contributing to the gender pay gap. In Western Australia (WA), the gender pay gap is notably lower than the national average, indicating progress in pay equality. McGurk stressed the importance of parental leave entitlements including superannuation accumulation, advocating for gender equality in retirement incomes.

With approximately 70% of WA’s public sector comprising women, McGurk emphasized the significance of setting an example for the private sector to follow suit. WA Premier Roger Cook echoed these sentiments, stating that the investment in this initiative would enhance future economic security for women. Cook acknowledged the challenges women face in retirement due to lower superannuation balances, often a result of taking time off work to care for children.

This initiative aims to empower WA families to make informed decisions regarding work-life balance, ultimately fostering a more equitable and inclusive workforce.
